Summer Student Researcher Position

St. Joseph’s Lebanese and Syrian Benevolent Society, Sydney, is seeking a third or fourth year social science student to assist the Society in mapping their community membership and to assist with website updating and related community relations work.

The successful applicant will have completed sufficient research methods training to enable s/he to plan a sample survey of the Society’s membership. Construction of a comprehensive population universe for the survey will be a prime objective of this summer project.

The Society will provide computer equipment necessary for the work. Supervision will be by Dr. Brian Joseph Ph.D. (Harvard), a founding CBU faculty member, and Ms. Becky Chisholm, Society President.

Flexible time and place working hours will allow the applicant to pursue other work and recreation arrangements over the 8 week length of the project, if desired. Remuneration is as set by the summer grant guidelines and may be subsidized further by the Society as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

• High personal motivation, self-management and detail-orientation; ability to take responsibility in meeting deadlines and making progress without direct supervision.

• Strong spoken and written communications skills.

• Strong existing computer skills with Microsoft Office (especially Access) and general Internet and electronic communications.

• Articulate and tactful communications skills.

• Handle and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity.

• Manage data collection projects by meeting paper and electronic mailing deadlines, entering data, transcribing tapes and handwritten notes; learn and use technology to do these tasks more efficiently.

• Assist staff in design and maintenance of online surveys and relational databases.

• Produce written, tabular and visual materials for research reports and presentations.

• Maintain and update Society website on regular basis, as well as manage social media community (Facebook).
Start Date: June 29, 2015 (8 weeks)

Salary: $15/hour (hours negotiable)
